Dear Canadian Hero Fund Supporters:

As we settle in for Christmas dinner with family and loved ones, I thought I would send a short thank-you and ‘Merry Christmas’ from the Hero Fund team. The Christmas season has a way of reminding us of everything that we have to be thankful for, and this year we have a lot. It’s really the first Christmas for Hero Fund - at this time last year we had just started fundraising, and could not have expected the tremendous amount of support there would be for this initiative. Because of generous gifts from people like you, we have raised almost $100,000 and have awarded $10,000 in scholarships this year. That has truly exceeded our expectations and we thank you for the donations, letters, third-party fundraisers, tweets and online messages that have continued to grow our scholarship fund and the grassroots movement of support for our Canadian Forces and their families.

Christmas is also a time when we are reminded of the bravery of our men and women in uniform. Whether it’s on a snowy base here in Canada, or an outpost on the other side of the world, they are often separated from their families and loved ones at Christmas. Please keep those soldiers in your thoughts and prayers today, and especially their families, whose sacrifice is never more apparent than over the Christmas season.
